Start with the observation
Human beings arrive dependent, learn inside an order they did not establish, and leave effects they cannot fully gather back.
Follow the reasoning
- Freedom does not mean independence from every condition; every choice borrows a body, a world and a future it did not create.
- Conscience treats some choices as worthy and others as blameworthy even when nobody else is watching.
- If actions reach beyond the moment, it is reasonable to ask whether the person is accountable beyond the moment too.
A passage to hold beside it
“Does this human being suppose that they will be left unattended?” 1
Read plainly
Being given room to choose is not the same as being abandoned. Silence can be the space in which responsibility becomes real.
Try observing this
Recall one choice that mattered even though no one saw it. Ask why it still matters to you.
