Start with the observation

We often say nature made something when we mean that it appeared through regular processes within nature.

Follow the reasoning

  1. A description of regularity is valuable, but regularity is not automatically an independent agent.
  2. The word nature gathers laws, materials and events under one name; the name itself possesses no knowledge or intention.
  3. If every part depends on the whole system, assigning creative independence to the part multiplies the difficulty rather than solving it.

A passage to hold beside it

“What are you? Where do you come from? And where are you going?” 1

Read plainly

Nature may name the page, the grammar or the printing process. Naming it does not yet identify the author.

Try observing this

Notice the next time the word nature appears in an explanation. Ask whether it describes a process or supplies a maker.
